About us

Feral Child Yorkshire is a small business in Leeds. We make things by hand, in small batches.

Who we are

Feral Child Yorkshire started with a quilt made for a friend's new baby and a Scout camp blanket that needed replacing. Neither could be bought ready-made in a way we liked, so we made them ourselves. We're a small team in Leeds who grew up outdoors — on Dales walks, at Scout camps, round fires — and we make the kind of things that go along on those days and come home a bit muddier each time.

Where we make things

Everything is made in a bright workroom in Leeds, with big windows, a long cutting table and shelves of folded fabric sorted by colour. The quilts are pieced on an old straight-stitch machine that does one thing very well, and the blankets are cut and edged on the same table. On a good afternoon the light comes in low across the floor, which is when we take most of our photos.

How we make them

We use cotton for the quilts — new quilting cottons, reclaimed shirting and, for commissions, clothes you send us — and recycled wool for the blankets, because it stays warm when it's damp. A quilt takes four to eight weeks from first cut to binding, depending on the size and the pattern. Blankets are quicker: we make them a few at a time, and each one is checked and edged by hand.

You can see the work on our quilts, camp blankets and T-shirts pages, or get in touch.

Feral Child Yorkshire also works on software and design services, and has a forest school in planning.
